King Kog

Expanding a niche bicycle shop

Project Background

Designlab has been asked to redesign a local, woman-owned small business, King Kog Bicycles. Established in Brooklyn in 2005. King Kog opened their west coast retail store in Oakland 2014. Originally founded as an accessories shop for messengers, the two retail locations now cater to a wide range of cycling aficionados. Over the last 5 years based on increased demand they expanded their offerings to include retail sales of vintage, new and custom built bicycles as well as many services and products.

Project Challenge

The King Kog brand is a niche boutique shop coming from humble beginnings with big dreams. By 2020 they propose to launch four new retail shops in L.A, Portland, Houston and Minneapolis. The company website presence needs to reflect both their humble roots and big aspirations.

Project Solution and Next Steps

King Kog now has an all-in-one solution for their website, rather than it being spliced together over Instagram, Big Cartel, Tumblr, a separate POS system, and clutters of paper. This new integrated technology stack, and user experience for community forums, online bookings, and personal profiles - will be useful going forward as King Kog expands to four new stores.

My challenges with King Kog were having time for getting to all the UI screens. I built several more screens not shown here, but the quality was low, so I had to start over. With more time, I can practice building out more key screens in 2017. Then testing their effectiveness in studies with the King Kog audience.
